Publishing Instructions:
Basic Locations, Names and Addresses:
Web Publishing typically involves creating a web page on your computer and then uploading that page to our web hosting server. Our server name (and address) is web.nmsu.edu
Please Note: This server address begins with web and NOT www.
Your files should go in a directory (folder) named public_html
The first file you create should be named index.html
Your Web address will be http://web.nmsu.edu/~USERNAME where USERNAME is your actual MyNMSU User Name.
Security/Firewall - Using FTP and SCP from Off Campus:
For security reasons, not just anyone can upload data to our servers at NMSU. If you are uploading data to Web.NMSU.edu from a computer off campus you will likely need to use our FREE VPN Client which will allow a Virtual Private Network Connection to our server. (If uploading from a computer on campus, this is not required)
Upload/Transfer Methods:
The most common method of uploading your files to our server at web.nmsu.edu is to use one of the following:
- FTP (File Transfer Protocal)

- SCP (Secure Copy) - also SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocal)

- SSH - It is also possible to SSH to web.nmsu.edu and edit your web pages directly on the server. PuTTY is a free implementation of SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

File or Directory Permission Problems: It is sometimes possible, for various reasons, that file and directory permissions get set incorrectly via the utilities listed above. In the case you get file or directory permission errors when attempting to access you page, you can easily repair them by using the following utility:
