- Matters of Life and Death: a Jewish approach to medical ethics.
by Elliot N. Dorff
- Call Number: BM538 .H43 D68 1998
- An extensive work divided into four parts: matters of method and belief,
moral issues at the beginning of life, matters at the end of life, and
the communal context of medical care. Readers are introduced to the
fundamental beliefs underlying Jewish health beliefs and medical ethics.
The section on the beginning of life examines: procreation, infertility,
insemination, surrogate motherhood, adoption, single parenthood, contraception,
abortion, sterilization, genetics, homosexuality, pregnancy, and masturbation.
Part three looks at suicide, assisted suicide, active and passive euthanasia,
use of animal and artificial organs, organ donation, cremation, and
autopsy. Other chapters focus on mental health, tattoos, body piercing,
cosmetic surgery, the disabled, and cloning. The book concludes with
a lengthy appendix on philosophical foundations to bioethics, a bibliography,
and an index. An excellent resource!
