Course Description
This course is designed to help you become proficient at technical communication
in both academic and professional settings. In this class you will produce
a variety of documents designed to help you:
- Develop effective,
clear, and user-friendly paper and online documents
- Develop a professional
writing style for various rhetorical contexts and audiences
- Understand what
constitutes effective document design
- Create online
content for specific purposes
- Produce quality
documents in a team setting
- Gain experience
in creating and delivering oral presentations
This class is about
learning skills that you will need while on the job. For this reason,
all of the assignments are designed to give you further knowledge of particular
aspects of on-the-job communication.
The assignments for this class are as follows:
- A job application
where you create a resume and cover letter based on a job/internship
advertisement (individual assignment)
- A memo in which
you study in detail aspects of technical communication in your major/field
of studies through a personal interview and a professional journal article
analysis (individual assignment)
- A set of instructions
in which you are asked to incorporate clear instructions , visual rhetoric,
and considerations of user-friendliness (usability) (group assignment)
- A website that
introduces the below technical report project that you will be working
on at the end of the semester(group assignment)
- A technical report,
written collaboratively, in which you identify a local issue/problem,
do research on the problem, and write a final technical report on your
group's issue (group assignment)
