Jim Maupin, M.P.A. Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Criminal Justice
Academic Head, Department of Criminal Justice
Welcome to my space on the Department of Criminal Justice web site!
I have been at NMSU since the Fall 1995 semester. Our family moved to Las Cruces as part of a long-term plan to reside in the wonderful climate of the desert southwest. That plan was hatched after spending five years earning a Ph.D. in Political Science at Arizona State University along with Dr. Bond Maupin's Ph.D. in Justice Studies and MSW at ASU.
Family and professional life is great in Las Cruces. The state of New Mexico and surrounding region provide for a lot of outdoor adventure the year round. The family has become diehard Aggie Volleyball fans. The team is great and their presence enhances the total NMSU experience.
I became Department Head in 2004 after serving as Director of the Master of Criminal Justice program for six years. I have the good fortune of working with a dedicated group of faculty in the Department. They are active research scholars, who are also committed to helping students learn, and making a difference in the community. I encourage you to visit their individual spaces to learn even more.
I am teaching less these days as a result of my expanded administrative responsibilities. It takes a great deal of focus to keep 625 undergraduate student majors and 85 graduate students progressing steadily toward their degrees. We are successful in this endeavor, with over 100 Bachelor of Criminal Justice and around 20 Master of Criminal Justice students graduating each year. This could not be accomplished without the dedication of the entire CJ team and motivated students.
In the classroom I still teach statistics to BCJ and MCJ students. I find the experience rewarding and look forward to many more years in the classroom. I continue to publish from my research activities and have been focusing on systematic analysis of the ethical orientations of law enforcement officers with a colleague from Northern Arizona University.
