Take Home Quiz on Cultural Relativism
1. Formulate CR. State the Normative Theory of Cultural Relativism; that is,
type out the cultural relativist's conception of the criterion of moral rightness
for act tokens. Be sure to define all technical terms employed in the criterion--for
example, 'society, 'moral code of a society', etc.
2. PEE the argument from the Reformer's Dilemma against CR.
To Present the argument, simply write it down in valid form.
Now you must Explain and Evaluate it. When explaining the argument,
make sure to provide a definition or account for each technical term. Also be
sure to give a rationale for each premise--a reason, sub-argument,
or example illustrating why a defender of the argument would believe the premise
to be true. Then evaluate the argument. Say whether the argument
is valid or not (and it better be valid!). Say what the logical form of the
argument is. Comment on whether the argument is sound or not. Remember: if you
believe the argument to be unsound, you must pick a line and state an objection.
(If you have problems PEEing, refer to your "How to PEE" handout or
send me an email).
