Mill's Qualified Hedonism
'It is quite compatible with the principle of utility to recognize the
fact, that some kinds of pleasure are more desirable and more valuable than
others. It would be absurd that while, in estimating all other things, quality
is considered as well as quantity, the estimation of pleasures should be supposed
to depend on quantity alone.'
Higher pleasures: pleasures of the intellect, of aesthetics,
and of morality; involve "higher faculties".
Lower pleasures: pleasures of the body, including pleasures associated with reproduction, eating and drinking, excretion, lolling about on the beach, etc; involve "lower faculties".
I(e) = the intensity of the pleasure in e, with higher numbers representing
more intense pleasures.
D(e) = the duration of e, measured in seconds.
Q(e) = the quality rating of e, with higher quality pleasures getting higher
numbers.
QH(e) = the number of qualified hedons in an episode, e, of pleasure = I(e)
X D(e) X Q(e).
Millian Qualified Hedonism (MQH): The intrinsic value of a
a life, L, (for the person who lives it) is the result of subracting the total
number of dolors contained in L from the total number of qualified hedons in
L.
Moore's Bestiality Objection (revised)
1. If MQH is an acceptable axiological theory, the Porky's life is outstandingly
good.
2. It's not the case that Porky's life is outstandingly good.
3. Therefore, it's not the case that MQH is an acceptable axiological theory.
