WHAT IS PVCD?

What is Paradoxical Vocal Cord (Fold) Dysfunction ?

Paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction is the inappropriate adduction of the vocal cords during inhalation or when the supraglottic structures
prolapse or constrict which results in dyspnea.  Onset of vocal cord
dysfunction can be exercise or stress.  The degree of glottic
dysfunction depends on the severity of the airway obstruction indicating
the severity of the disorder for the patient.  Due to the inappropriate
adduction of the vocal folds, paradoxical vocal fold dysfunction is often
misdiagnosed as asthma. Symptoms of a paradoxical vocal cord attack
can include symptoms of stridor, shortness of breath, chest or throat
tightness,  coughing, tingling of the lips or fingers, and faintness or
dizziness (Colton & Casper, 1996).
