This project trains Social Work students to provide culturally-competent services in the field of family violence. The project focuses on providing intensive training and stipends to students placed in family violence field placements in Las Cruces, NM and El Paso, TX. Students are required to take a course on violence in the family and receive additional training on family violence during their field placement. Students are placed either at La Casa, Inc in Las Cruces, NM or the Center Against Family Violence in El Paso, TX.

Goals and Objectives

Goal: The purpose of the Domestic Violence and Hispanic Families BSW and MSW Social Work Training Project is to increase the numbers and the capacity of the social workers, advocates and allies working in the field of preventing and treating domestic violence in Hispanic (Mexican-American) communities in the Southern Border Region of New Mexico and Western Texas.

Objective One: Research, develop and implement a cutting edge, culturally competent domestic violence training and skills building program for BSW and MSW students at the School of Social Work, New Mexico State University.
- Using agency and community input create a culturally competent, comprehensive field training program on domestic violence.
- Create a generalist social work course emphasizing cultural content on domestic violence prevention, treatment and research.

Objective Two: Develop field placements on the BSW and MSW level that will provide social work students with a multi-ethnic environment and a culturally competent training program that will increase their skills in working with families involved in domestic violence in the Southern New Mexico/Western Texas Border Area
- Utilize two local domestic violence programs that provide residential and non residential services to Mexican/Americans and other groups as field placements for BSW and MSW students.

Objective Three: Develop a stipend program for promising MSW and BSW students who are committed to a career in domestic violence.
- Recruit MSW and BSW students for Domestic Violence stipends who reflect the dominant culture in the Southern New Mexico/Western Texas Border area and show future commitment to domestic violence service.
- Graduate social work students who will pursue careers in domestic violence.

Objective Four: Identify different approaches to prevention, identification of, and the treatment efforts for domestic violence in Hispanic/Mexican American families.
- Create a workbook on different approaches using the experiences of the agencies and students in the project.

Objective Five: Engage in efforts to impact domestic violence prevention services, intervention efforts, policies and practice for Hispanic/Mexican American families on the national, Tribal, State, local governmental and non-profit agency level.
- Outreach, dissemination of workbooks, articles and presentations.
- Attendance at national conferences on domestic violence and presentation of papers or workshops.
