EDUC 451/551 Elementary Science Methods - Spring 2006

Students from this course created Learning Cycle Lesson Plans and studied how inquiry-based instruction can enhance the learning of science, including students who are English Language Learners. One strategy is the field trip. These students visited a cannulated cow from the NMSU Agriculture Department. Dr. Tim Ross toured us from the corrals to the laboratory. Andrea, Aurora, Erika, Javier, Jerriette, Jolene, Joyce, Luz, Tommy and Nidia reached into the rumen and removed samples of food. Under the microscope, they found microbes that assist digestion (see pictures 1, 2, 3). They developed ideas about using this inquiry approach with elementary students.
