Day 9: The next day, we stopped at these steam vents. We are actually on top of Kilaeua which is the heat source for these powerful sauna-like caves.

Mikela emerges from the vent.

Kandy sat in an outdoor version. Claustrophobia?

This one was deeper and semi-open. No tourists here.

I sit atop the vent looking down at the Licona women (literally).

A look into Mother Earth. Time to continue our journey.

The lava has taken the road out. We ventured across the lava until we found the asphalt again...along with "private property" and "keep out" signs. Nothing but lava to the ocean, but these guys must have been speculating on land.

We arrive at Kahana beach. It was a black beach with rather large breakers.

Black as coal.

Just like the pictures of many sunsets, so too about the waves. There is something about them that beckons pictures.

Kandy and Rebeca spend some moments feeling the energy from the sea.

Did I tell you, it is a clothing optional beach?

Most did not venture out into these waters.

I really was trying to capture the rather large breakers.

I got one!

Rebeca played in the black sand and the foam from the waves.

The beach would turn from black to white and then to black again.

This one gets her attention!

We left the beach hungry and decided to stop for a papaya break.
