USS Rocky Mount (AGC-3)

The USs Rocky Mount was an amphibious assault command ship. This class of ship was created when it was realized that combat ships did not have the facilities to handle the large number of officers and staff required to orchestrate invasions.

Although "the Rock" looked like the supply ship she was laid out as, she was a front-line command post with the most modern communications gear. Her main function was planning and coordinating movements of men and material. Serving as command ship for the Fifth and Sixth Amphibious Assault Groups and later the Seventh Fleet, she quartered officers from the British, Australian and US forces.
