Ruff Berver, 79, of Silver City, passed away at his home on January 6,
2002, after a long fight with cancer. The Funeral Mass
was celebrated Friday, January 11, 2002 at St. Francis
Newman Center with Father Marcos Reyna officiating. Interment was
in Ft. Bayard National Cemetery with full Military Honors by American
Legion Post 18 and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 3347.
Mr. Berver was born July 4, 1922 in Hastings, NE. He was the son of
George and Nettie Berver. He was married to Pauline Guy. Mr. Berver is
survived by his wife Pauline; two sons Greg Berver of Silver City; Paul
Berver of Las Cruces, NM; six grandchildren Brendan; Meghan; Teresa;
Richard; David; Mary; one great-grandchild James; one sister Frances
Brockmeyer; two brothers Tony Berver and George Berver. He was preceded
in death by his parents; one son Don Berver; two brothers David Berver
and Joe Berver and one sister Mary Northrup.
Mr. Berver served with the United States Navy in the South Pacific, the
Philippines, and China during World War II. He was a graduate of Regis
University in Denver, CO. While in Denver, he was employed by the
Burlington Railroad and the City Parks and Recreation Department. Later
he moved to Clifton, AZ, where he was manager of Lewallen’s Inc. In
1968, he moved to Silver City where he was employed by the Phelps Dodge
Corporation in the accounting department. After his retirement, he was
employed at T G & Y and as an independent accounting contractor.
He was a member of the American Legion and was a former president of the
Silver City Kiwanis Club. He was active in the Miss America Pageant
program for many years in Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.
