Communication for Developing Community
Several of the authorities in _Building Classroom Discipline_ discuss the value of empathetic and clear communication styles for developing positive learning communities. Some examples are, Haim Ginott: congruent communication; Thomas Gordon: I-messages and you-messages; Fred Jones: nonverbal communication; Alfie Kohn, Jane Nelson and Lynn Lott: classroom meetings; C.M. Charles: listening sensitively, showing genuine interest, and speaking encouragingly. Since we are all human and communication is not perfect, there will be frequent times of misunderstanding. What communication practices have you found especially meaningful for clarifying intentions/understandings and resolving issues? Why do you think a particular communication practice supports the learning environment?

Creating a Learning Community
The start of the school year is a critical time to begin establishing a positive learning community for students and adults. Teachers do a variety of activities that can begin to build relationships, respect, and responsibility. Such activities may be class routines, organization, relationship building tasks, and student profile descriptions. What is one of the most effective tools that you have used or seen used at a particular grade/age level to promote a positive learning environment at the beginning of the school year?
