Remember to evaluate the Internet sources for relevancy and scholarship. What is the date of publication? Is the information from a refereed or a nonrefereed journal? (In a refereed journal, articles are reviewed by a panel of experts in the field and must follow specific research guidelines.) Does the author present information from a personal point of view and/or a variety of points of view? Is the information accurate, unbiased, and evidence-based? Does the source add to your knowledge base? |

Use the questions, Web sites below, and other credible resources to further investigate and reflect on critical topics in this chapter. Discuss them with interested individuals in your setting or with a small group in an electronic Chat Room. 1. How would you describe a classroom where time is frequently "wasted" (not used well for learning)? How would you describe a classroom where time is generally used appropriately for meaningful learning? What accounts for the differences? 2. What are some examples of classroom structures (room arrangements, class agreements, class jobs, and opening routines) that can increase meaningful learning time? 3. Think about the age level of the students you teach or hope to teach. How does a responsible student of this age look and sound? How might students of this age learn to value taking responsibility for their own actions and learning? 4. What specific graphic charts or models could be posted in the classroom to support self-responsibility for actions and learning? |
