It was reported that NASSMC may receive additional funding from NASA to expand its "Linking Leaders Project" possibly to New Mexico. A copy of "Formula for Success: A Business Leaders Guide to Supporting Math & Science Education" was shared with the group. Free copies can be ordered from www.ed.og/pubs. Terry Dunbar reported that a new group of business leaders called the Technology Alliance has been formed in Albuquerque to assist schools with their technology needs. Tom Savage, the APS Schools to Careers Coordinator, can be contacted for further information about the Alliance. Ken Eckelmeyer sparked a discussion concerning the extent to which business leaders want action oriented suggestions. Gil Sena suggested that business leaders are also important in getting support for new policy models. Mary Jo Daniel refocused the discussion on previous conversations about ways the Partnership might support legislation on teacher professional development. The group was informed that Representative Miera plans to reintroduce a bill that would give teachers the right to a three credit tuition waiver each year at New Mexico public universities. A consensus was reached that we should contact Senator Nava and Representative Miera to inquire concerning legislation that might be drafted, and that we should coordinate such efforts with NMSTA. Information on the US Department of Educations "America Counts" program was shared. Further information can be obtained at www.ed.gov. 2. There was a discussion on the draft paper on data needs for teacher preparation. Miguel Licona pointed out that the kinds of quantitative data asked for in the paper only give part of the picture. Claire Fenton suggested that a legislative Memorial might be possible. 3. Update from the State Dept of Education. Larry Martinez informed us that the Title II report has been finished and that the funding level for Title II will remain constant until October 1999. Although attempts to "block grant" Title II monies with other programs has no been approved, there is a new requirement that there be a state-level reading education program through Title II. Jean Podborny indicated that school accreditation work continues. Mary Neikirk asked that volunteers who would like to serve on the state Math Materials Adoption Committee should contact Mary Jane Vinella at 827-1801. Mary also reported that next year's Summer Institute will be from August 2-6 at San Juan Community College. Further information will be available on the SDE web site (sde.state.nm.us). Carol Brown reported that the State School Board approved the Science Performance Standards with the slight modification of modifying "Theory of Evolution" to "Darwin's Theory of Evoluation". 4. Board and Officer Elections - Tim Aydelott reported that nominations are still open for Partnership Board and Officers. The elections are now planned for the next meeting. Send nominations to him at aydelott@nmmnh.state.nm.us 5. Announcements Mary Jo Daniel encouraged teachers to apply for the Presidential Awards and the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Program. Julie Johnston shared copies of three Los Alamos National Labs publications: "Threatened and Endangered Species Habitat Management Plan", "A Report to Communities on Environmental Safety and Health", and "Overview of Environmental Surveillance". Additional copies are available via email to juliej@lanl.gov. Julie also reported that about 30 scholarships will be available from the LANL Foundation.
