NMPMSE Meeting Summary 1/28/99 Prepared by Betsy Yost Attending: Vicente Llamas, Clo Mingo, Paula McGee, Rick Scott, Julie Johnson, Terry Dunlap, Ann Madsen, Bill Pletsh, Kathryn Powell, Mary Jo Daniel, Pat Hess, Barbara Kimbell, Tish Morris, Sharon Dogruel, Evangeline S. Trujillo,Betsy Yost 1. NASSMC Vicente and Rick will be going to the NASSMC meeting on 2/5 7/99. NM may be receiving a grant from NASSMC. 2. Update of legislation: Rick distributed a summary of legislation pending in NM. Betsy identified the legislation concerning AP in NM. The website is: www.state.nm.us. Rick was given the task of drafting a letter to Rep. Picraux expressing our concern that House Bill 157 on the Mentorship of Beginning Teachers was mixing the support and evaluation roles so as to likely compromise the support role. 3. Regional Roundtables for K-16 partnerships for Teacher preparation and development. NMPMSE decided to submit a proposal to the CHE for funding to organize regional roundtables for to discuss and build K-16 partnerships. Rick will take the lead in this. 4. Reports A. Regional Ed Technology Assistance Project. Carmen Gonzales at NMSU is the director. Sharon Dogruel is the coordinator and is housed at SDE. It is a comprehensive technology program including a Leadership Academy and plans for a distance learning doctoral program. UCAN will send a list of its leadership teams in NM to Sharon. B. Tech Corps. Brian Harris could not attend. Rick indicated that the program organizes volunteer to assist schools with technology. It is based at Technet and there is a web site (www.techcorps.nm.org). C. NM-CETP. NMSU is in the process of identifying a new Director as Ricardo Jacquez has resigned. In a effort to further collaboration, Barbara Kimbell will be housed at UNM. Elaine Hampton has moved to working with the WERC program. D. UCAN-RSI. UCAN is preparing its performance effective review for the National Science Foundation. Data collected in the third year has begun to show improved performance in test scores in all four states. E. AP-NM. Paula McGee indicated that the program would be interested in collaborating with other partners in a proposal for CHE Eisenhower funds. F. SDE. Professional development opportunities were reported. A math/science conference was to be held at Onate HS in Las Cruces on January 30 and include 82 pre-service teachers. It is called SIMSE2. Check the Web sites at www.state.nm.us for information about the 1999 Summer Institute. Presenters are being sought. 5. Board and Officer Elections This will be on the next agenda. 6. The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 19 from 1 pm until 4 pm at the NMMESA conference room, 2808 Central SE, ABQ.
