Minutes of the Meeting of the New Mexico Partnership for Math & Science Ed 7/24/98 Sandia Mountain Nature Center, Cedar Crest, N.M. Attending: Carol Thorensen (CETP Evaluator), Tish Morris (NMMNH), Claire Fenton (NMMESA), Rick Scott (Co-Pres.), Vicente LLamas (Co-Pres), Betsy Yost (UCAN/AP-NM), Tim Aydelott (NMMNH), Barbara Kimbell (NM-CETP), Julie Johnson (LANL), Dawn Hipsh (LANL Foundation). NASSMC Update: This is the National Association of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions and Vicente serves on their board. NSF has funded a pilot project for 3 states to build support to sustain math/science reform. The 3 states are Michigan, Colorado, and Ohio. NASSMC has formed a subcommittee to look at the issue of backlash to math/science reform. The backlash issue was discussed from a New Mexico perspective. While extensive discussion focused on the importance of local elections, no action was determined. IT WAS DECIDED TO TRACK VARIOUS LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGS AND TO DEVELOP A MECHANISM TO ASSURE PARTNERSHIP REPRESENTATION AT IMPORTANT MEETINGS. UCAN WILL CHECK THE WEB PAGE AND RECOMMEND A PLAN FOR THE PARTNERSHIP. Another discussion focused on the higher education eisenhower funds and a cooperative effort in Montana. CLAIRE AND BETSY WILL REPORT ON THE MONTANA CONCEPT in detail. TIMSS Followup: CETP and the Partnership will work with SEDL to offer a workshop in the Spring. Those who attended the spring, 1998, workshop will be invited back to look at the use of the data. It will also look at the Terra Nova, Stanford 9 and NAIP as assessment instruments and to use the data in policy as well as classroom equity. ELAINE HAMPTON WILL CONTACT SDE (PAT RAEL) TO DETERMINE IF THEY SPONSOR A DATA CONFERENCE. The potential timing for the workshop will be March or April. LANL Foundation: Dawn Hipsh indicated that the Foundation is based in Santa Fe. Its focus includes math/science and community involvement. Their largest award in the last year was $40,000 and their funds for matching awards have not been utilized. She distributed a packet with additional information. Project Reports: These were presented as part of the introductions to the LANL Foundation representative. Board and Officer Elections: They will be held at a December meeting during the state math and science teacher association conferences.
