Public History Program

Program Requirements

Students seeking a Masters Degree in Public History must fulfill the following requirements:
  • Two history research seminars
  • One history reading seminar
  • Public History seminar
  • Internship (3-6 credits): Selecting an internship with the approval of the Public History Director is required.  The internship will include a written report.
  • 21 credits of "traditional history", including research and reading seminars.  Of these courses, at least 6 will be non-United States courses.
  • 18-21 credits including Public History seminar, 3-6 internship credits, and 12 additional public history credits.  With the approval of the department, up to 9 of these latter public history credits may come from outside the History Department.

Students choosing this program must pass an oral examination over graduate course work and a written internship report.  This program is designed for students who plan careers in areas such as archives, museums, historic preservation, and government or business history.
